Kentfield Restaurants

Kentfield Has Exactly Two Restaurants. Here's Where Everyone Else Eats.

September 17, 2026

Walk College Avenue in Kentfield on any given weekday and you will pass exactly two restaurants that carry a Kentfield address: Half Day Cafe in the morning, Guesthouse at night. That is the entire sit-down dining roster inside town limits. And yet ask a longtime resident where they ate this week and you will get a list five or six names long, none of which required leaving the immediate area, and almost none of which are technically in Kentfield at all.

That gap between "what's here" and "where we eat" is not a complaint. It is how this particular corner of Marin has always worked, and the 2026 Best of the County results from Marin Magazine just drew the map more clearly than usual.

The Two Addresses That Count

Half Day Cafe sits on College Avenue directly across from College of Marin, in a building with a history that includes stints as a garage and an antique store before it settled into breakfast. It won Best of the County for Breakfast/Brunch in 2026, the kind of category win that tends to go to a place locals have already decided about years earlier.

A few doors down, Guesthouse occupies 850 College Ave with a kitchen built by chef Jared Rogers after a decade at Picco in Larkspur, working alongside restaurateur Dustin Sullivan. The restaurant has earned Michelin recognition and built its weekly rhythm around traditions rather than a rotating menu: Prime Rib Mondays, a Sunday fried chicken service, a wine list deep enough to reward repeat visits. Between the two of them, breakfast and dinner in Kentfield proper are handled by two kitchens that have been doing this for years.

Lunch, dessert, pizza night, and anything new all point elsewhere.

Where the Awards Actually Point

Look at the rest of the 2026 Best of the County results for this stretch of Marin and a pattern shows up immediately. The winners and finalists cluster two places: Bon Air Center in Greenbrae, and Ross Common a mile in the other direction.

Victoria Bakery has been at Bon Air for a century, known around town for its strawberry shortcake and princess cake. SusieCakes, the newer arrival, took a 2026 finalist nod in the same category with a more classic American lineup, marble cake and vanilla cupcakes among the draws. On the pizza side, Squared Pizza does Detroit-style, square and crispy-edged, while Apizza & Loving Cup runs a quick-service counter with organic dough and sauce plus a frozen yogurt counter attached. Two of those three pizza spots picked up finalist honors in the same 2026 cycle.

None of them are in Kentfield.

The Short Drive Nobody Thinks of as a Drive

This is the part that outsiders miss and residents never think to explain, because it does not feel like a compromise from the inside. Kentfield and Greenbrae share a school district and most of the eastern stretch of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard that runs between them. There is no meaningful sense of crossing into another town when you go from College Avenue to Bon Air Center. It is a few minutes, often on foot for anyone near the Kentfield-Greenbrae line, and the destination has always functioned as the neighborhood's actual commercial center in a way College Avenue, with its two restaurants and a college campus, never tried to be.

Bon Air Center works the way a Main Street would in a town that has one: bakeries, pizza counters, a walkway with outdoor tables. Kentfield does not compete with that. It relies on it.

Ross Common Fills in What's Left

A mile the other direction, Ross Common covers the categories that neither College Avenue nor Bon Air Center fully own. Tony Tutto's farm-to-table pizza draws families with a kid- and dog-friendly patio, and Crown & Crumpet adds a tearoom option, savory croissants and crumpets in the morning, loose-leaf tea and pastries on weekend afternoons. Between the two towns, the actual food map for anyone living in Kentfield looks less like a neighborhood and more like a triangle, with College Avenue holding down the two ends of the day and Bon Air Center and Ross Common splitting everything in between.

What's New Is Also Not in Kentfield

The most recent addition to that triangle reinforces the same pattern rather than breaking it. Tipsy Dumpling opened in Greenbrae as a soup dumpling spot, made in-house and visible from the counter, and it has already picked up the kind of early enthusiasm that tends to stick. One early review put it plainly:

"Finally, a great new dumpling spot in Marin!"

That energy landed in Greenbrae, not on College Avenue, which is exactly what the last several years of Best of the County results would have predicted. When something new opens in this part of Marin, it opens where the foot traffic and commercial space already exist. Kentfield's two restaurants are a fixture, not a growth area, and nobody here seems to mind.

The Actual Takeaway

None of this means Kentfield's food scene is thin. It means the scene was never meant to sit entirely inside Kentfield's own borders in the first place. A resident who wants breakfast walks to Half Day Cafe. A resident who wants dinner with a wine list and a standing Monday tradition walks to Guesthouse. Everything else, the bakery run, the pizza night, the new dumpling spot everyone is talking about, happens a few minutes away in Greenbrae or Ross, in towns that share a zip code, a school district, and in practice, a single everyday food rotation with Kentfield itself.

That is worth knowing if you already live here, because it explains why a search for "restaurants in Kentfield" will always undersell the neighborhood. The food is there. It is just filed under two other addresses.
